If you’re not already using podcasting to create greater reach and impact among your target audiences…should you? And, if yes, what do you need to know to create winning content?

Before I address this topic in today’s post, here’s a little context:

When chatting with my teenage daughter last weekend about the rapidly dwindling number of people who engage in the ancient art of writing letters (yes, I know, a little bit of ‘in my day’ dad stuff), she shared this startlingly simple, but accurate, observation:

“But dad, no one reads any more…unless they have to or want to”.

That got my attention and I started to think, is she right?

And the answer is largely yes.

Audiences Just Don’t Read Like They Used to Any More

Here are some acid test. Thinking about your own behaviour, even over the last many years:

• Have you become a less frequent reader of physical daily or weekend newspapers?
• If previously a regular reader of blogs, are you reading less these days and/or spending less time when reading the articles you do read?
• And if you were to characterize how you read today – do you find yourself scanning a great deal more today than you did in the past?

If you answered yes to some or all of these, you’re not alone. The majority of adults in the western world are in the same boat. And for good reason…as most folks find themselves feeling:

• Increasingly time poor
• Swamped by too much information coming their way, and
• Like the rest of the world, finding that they access the majority of their online content and  emails via mobile phones.

And the last of these is a huge change that should sway you to revisit ‘how’ you reach your target audiences and ‘via what content’…

…Because, here’s a reality for the foreseeable future: written content will increasingly play second fiddle to visual, video and audio based (primarily podcasts) content.
