The Truth About Your Image as a Speaker and First Impressions – Podcast 21

First impression Cropped

Which camp do you fall into when it comes to debates about whether first appearances matter or should count for a jot when you speak in public? Would you lean more towards a ‘you should always be suited and booted’ or ‘wear what makes you feel comfortable/happy’ mindset?

According to a recent post in Science Daily: New research suggests that a person’s appearance alone can trump fact. First impressions are so powerful that they can shape everything from whether we ultimately end up liking someone to our assessments of their trustworthiness, and more.

And the upshot is this.

Even if you’re of the view that they shouldn’t, audiences can and will make instant judgements about you based on what they see.

And worse still, according to myriad studies (from Harvard & MIT, Princeton, and more), these impressions are usually formed within in a matter of seconds of people clapping eyes on you – commonly before you’ve said a single word!

So, in the interests of helping you to put your best foot forward (and if you’re anything like me, maybe you’re having a few instant flashbacks to motherly advice about: ‘combing your hair’, ‘polishing your shoes’, ‘tucking your shirt in’, and more, at this point)…

…It’s my great pleasure to interview one of Ireland’s best-known style gurus, Frances Jones of Image Matters about how you can ace the first impressions test every time you take to a podium.
