Why Speaking up Adds Oomph to Your Personal Brand – Podcast 46

Speak Up to Boost Your Personal BrandSorry, did you say something?

Sad as it may seem, if you’re relying on a content strategy to build excitement about your ideas and boost your personal brand, here’s a reality check.

In a world where the level of noise online and offline has reached saturation point, it’s getting tougher to create content that causes people to tune in.

“Before you read this article, I want to ask you a question. Do I have your full attention?”

These are the opening 2 sentences by Ian Hardy in a BBC article today.

A great question Ian. And truth be told, the answer for most people would have to be a resounding no.  At least, not entirely. This is down to the fact that most folks find it hard to focus on anything for longer than a few minutes these days.

And this certainly applies to text based content, including blogs – which collectively accounts for the vast majority of information clogging up the Internet today.

But it’s not all gloom and please don’t stop blogging or sharing other awesome written content online any time soon…

...Instead, I invite you to discover why adding content you create via speaking up offline and online (audio or video) can ramp up interest in your ideas and how your audiences respond to you. Why?

While I regularly write on the power and virtues of speaking up offline, here are just a few insights into the power of videos ahead of blogs provided by Dr. Liraz Margalit in her recent post in Psychology Today – illustrating why speaking up online matters too.

Consumers are:

  • 39 percent more likely to share content if it’s delivered via video
  • 36 percent more likely to comment, and
  • 56 percent more likely to give that video a coveted ‘like’

Of course, there are many reasons why speaking up via different means really pays.

It’s more intimate, more likely to solicit emotional reactions, and is quicker and easier for audiences to absorb.

And that’s the topic for today’s expert interview with Director of Marketing Technologies at Mingl Marketing, author of Google + for Small Businesses, professional speaker, and social media specialist (including being a queen of Google+), Lynette Young, who I was delighted to meet at the recent Social Media Marketing Week in San Diego.

Lean in to hear our chat about why speaking up can be your ticket to really winning far more attention online and offline.

How Do You Rate Your Content Marketing Strategies?

‘You can have the best ideas and content in the world, but if no one listens a remarkable thing will happen – nothing!’

OK, this is a re-framing of one my favourite (of many) quotes by legendary ad man David Ogilvy and it captures an issue faced by all creators of content today:

As audience inattention grows online and offline, so does the price of admission when it comes to winning attention.

Does this tally with your  experiences? Please share your thoughts and observations.
