When East Meets West, What’s a Speaker to Do? Podcast 52

Speaking to Asian Business AudiencesEven for accomplished speakers, engaging and influencing international audiences can present significant challenges. And nowhere is this truer than when Western world speakers address Asian business audiences.

If speaking to audiences in the Asia region like China, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, India, Taiwan, or others, it’s not enough be heard and understood…

…You have to pay great attention to cultural differences, which go beyond mere language, to win audiences over.

And forget about adopting a one size fits all approach to your communication.

You’ll need to change your tune to engage with the hugely diverse audiences you’ll find in different markets across Asia – even on a country by country basis. For example, if China is on your radar, you’ll find what Teo Kermeliotis of CNN refers to as a mosaic of markets there alone.

And here’s something else you should know before you hear today’s interview about what it takes to speak persuasively in these regions:

If you’re relying on a translator, beware of literal translations! Instead, take the time to work with your translator long before you speak so your meaning isn’t partially or entirely undermined.

Not only can poorly translated talks result in your messages being misconstrued, they can make you seem foolish and less trust worthy.

And here’s the thing: If you receive polite applause from your audiences, you could be oblivious to errors you have left in your wake.

So what does it take to set up talks you give in Asia for success?

That the topic addressed in today’s expert interview when I had a chance to speak with coach, international cross-cultural business consultant, and author of The Master Key to Asia David Clive Price.

Lean in as we chat about the secrets to better communication with business audiences in Asia.
